Brighton Community Anxiously Awaiting Freedom Skater’s Return

(June 12, 2011) – He’s skated more than 3,000 miles across the US, and it’s time for this young man to come home and celebrate. Austin Szelkowski, 25, of Fowlerville has gained national media attention during his 3,000 mile odyssey across the country. Known as “The Freedom Skater,” he will reunite with friends and supporters at a “welcome home” event on Tuesday, June 28 at Boomtown Kitchen Tap in the Green Oaks Mall. The party starts at 5:30 pm with a private VIP reception, and the public is welcome to come at 6 pm.

His journey began last October, when he skated away from the Statue of Liberty in NYC, and ends on June 15 in at the Santa Monica Pier. Why did he take this on? To inspire bold young pioneers to create the companies, jobs, and pathways of the future. According to Szelkowski, this generation faces an unprecedented challenge but also has an amazing opportunity.

“Millions of people have been left unemployed by the destabilization of old social and economic infrastructure. For this reason, young graduates are finding it increasingly difficult to secure the kind of employment and lifestyle enjoyed by their parents,” explains Szelkowski. “This is an opportunity in disguise, as the playing field is now wide-open for the young pioneers who will create our future.”

The idea was born a year ago during a 2010 Memorial Day Party put on by members of the Insights Group (www.insights-group.com), an entrepreneur support community based in Brighton. Members of the group have been huge fans and supporters of The Freedom Skater and his journey, and are thrilled at the national exposure his story has garnered.

“Austin is a superhero for a new generation,” says Sandi Maki, co-founder of the Insights Group. “His vision and commitment are extraordinary. He proves that the power of one’s thoughts is unlimited, and we are thrilled to be able to welcome him home.”

Insights Group members and friends are encouraged to attend the VIP reception at 5:30 and take the opportunity to reconnect in a more private setting. Then the party really starts to rock at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to come meet this remarkable young man in person. The event will be held in Boomtown’s private dining room, with a cash bar and food available for purchase.
